CNN has reported illness and hospitalizations linked to counterfeit Botox (see link below). Unfortunately, using counterfeit products is more common than you would think. Cost of goods have increased across the continuum of all consumer goods. Unfortunately, increased costs have also infiltrated spa products prompting some providers to utilize counterfeit products and products not approved by the FDA.
Counterfeit products are easy to find and purchase easily with a quick Google search Federal law requires that all health care providers who dispense or administer prescription drugs purchase those products only from authorized sources. The FDA’s investigation is ongoing, and the agency is currently working with AbbVie (the Botox manufacturer) to identify, investigate and remove suspected counterfeit Botox products found in the U.S.
How do you know if the Botox or neuromodulator product being injected into your face is genuine? First and foremost, build a trusting relationship with your injector and don’t price shop. The adage of “you get what you pay for” is especially true when it comes to beauty and healthcare products.
Second, does your provider participate in neuromodulator reward programs? Providers that seek to get their clients discounts through reward programs are proud partners of the manufacturer of Botox (Alle’ Rewards) and Jeuveau (Evolus Rewards) or neurotoxin companies. Spas are reimbursed by the manufacturer for the discounts their clients receive, if the products they order from the manufacturer match the rewards claimed. This is an easy way to determine if the Botox you receive is truly from AbbVe and not a counterfeit product.
Lastly, ask questions. A good injector should be knowledgeable and proud to discuss with you how neuromodulators work, the companies they have partnerships with, side effects of any product injected into your body, the expected results of your treatment and aftercare that should be followed. If your injector doesn’t have time to answer your questions or is unable to answer your questions, then trust your instincts and seek treatment from a reputable provider!!
